VENICE – Venice has tightened its grip on ‘hit and run’ visits to combat the phenomenon of overtourism. In 2025, for 54 days a year (all weekends between April 18 and the end of July including Fridays, plus a longer period at the end of April between one long weekend and another) to enter Venice it will be mandatory to pay the contribution for access on Fridays too: five euros as per the current provision, which becomes 10 euros for last minute tourists, those who purchase the ticket in the four days prior to arriving in the city. These are the new features announced today by Mayor Luigi Brugnaro, after the approval of an ad hoc resolution by the council which will now begin the approval process by the City Council of the Serenissima. Exemptions remain for residents of Veneto and Venetians. “Venice is the first city in the world to address the issue of overtourism“, claims Brugnaro.
WHICH DAYS DO YOU PAY
The days on which you have to pay to enter Venice are from April 18 to the end of July: from April 18 to May 4 you will pay every day. Then, from that date onwards, you will pay every weekend until the end of July, including the days of Friday, Saturday and Sunday and no longer just Saturday and Sunday as it was this year.
“We are re-proposing the measure in the same time frame hypothesized last year. The change this year is that we have added Friday and added the days of the Boat Show and the Redentore. The hours are the same, from 8:30 to 16. To reward those who book in advance we will continue to keep the contribution of five euros, we will increase it to 10 euros for those who book in the last four days”, explains the mayor. “There are those who ask for a limited number, but then how will we stop people from arriving? We would need doors and barriers. We are not in this phase, we are an open city that only needs to regulate flows. We want the city to be alive and open and not have a door”, assures Brugnaro, claiming the success of the measure that introduced the contribution for access.
“We have not created problems for businesses and citizens. Some of the results obtained are very important, such as having started to control the real numbers with smart control room. For example, we discovered that in this city there are about 49,000 residents, but that there are also 1,500 domiciled constantly. The city miraculously increases by 1,500 inhabitants. Then we have thousands of students. We are doing a very important job for other cities”, claims the mayor. “The regulation is not changed, the exemptions are the same. We try to encourage the booking of the visit in advance, rewarding those who choose to arrive on days when it is not scheduled, because this allows us to know how many people will arrive on those days. The access contribution cannot be sufficient to control flows, but it is not the solution for everything, but it is very important to have included a method, which is not used to make money, but is a way to defeat overtourism“, adds the Budget Councilor, Michele Zuin.
The Municipality intends to intensify controls. “Criminal sanctions are also foreseen for those who make false declarations”, warns Zuin. “In recent months, while in the city we have been ready to give voice to contrary opinions, the rest of the world has called us to understand how we are doing. We have also had requests from Formentera and Kyoto. Venice, from being the most exposed and criticized city, has become the first city to react to overtourism“, concludes the councilor for Economic Development, Simone Venturini.
