ROME – There could be over 2 thousand victims of the landslide that submerged a village in Papua on Friday New Guinea: the director revealed this of the National Disaster Center, Lusete Laso Mana, in a letter sent to the UN. The text defines the damage caused as “widespread” and highlights that the “consequences on the economic life” of the country are “serious”.

Rescue operations remain hampered by the lack of adequate equipment and, in several places in the area affected by the landslide, by debris that reaches up to ten meters in height. To date, just a dozen bodies of victims have been recovered. According to the United Nations, however, there are at least 670 missing people. And in the letter sent to the UN an even more serious toll is foreseen. The landslide hit the village of Kaokalam, located about 600 kilometers north-west of Port Moresby.
