ROME – An enormous crowd accompanied the funeral procession of Ebrahim Raisi along the streets of Tabriz, the capital of the eastern province of Azerbaijan. The images released by the national news agency IRNA show the streets invaded by thousands of peoplefor the missing leader.
This is the first ceremony in memory of the Iranian President who died on Sunday 19 May in the crash of the helicopter he was traveling on, returning from the inauguration of a public work. The official funeral will take place on Thursday 23 May in Mashad, the city in north-eastern Iran where Raisi was born.

Pain and emotion but also repression. Iran’s Attorney General has ordered the arrest of anyone who publishes insults against the late President Raision social media. It had already happened on Sunday evening, when the search for the aircraft lost in the fog on the border with Azerbaijan was still underway. On social media several users had posted images of cheering fireworks to the news of Raisi’s possible death.
