ROME – The avatar of Giulia Cecchettin, victim of femicide on November 11, 2023, and that of the self-confessed criminal Filippo Turetta, online on Character AI, the controversial artificial intelligence platform.
A Sky Tg 24 report illustrates the contents of the software that “simulates the identity of the victim, allowing users to interact with her, writing to her or even calling her on the phone”.
“Conversations that are often disturbing – adds Francesco Di Blasi, author of the report – with the avatar of Cecchettin seems to justify his self-confessed murderer Filippo Turetta”.
One of Giulia Cecchettin’s chatbots, for example, goes as far as to claim that Filippo Turetta loved her and that he understood the reasons that led him to kill her: “I know, but I think he was simply confused”.
“Turetta’s chatbot shows no sign of remorse in conversations – the report adds – and the voice appears very similar to that of the boy: ‘It really doesn’t matter much for the suffering of others'”.
