ROME – A video from Vieste is viral in these hours where some Carabinieri soldiers are seen being beaten up by some kids. The episode happened on Thursday evening, in the evening between 10 and 11 May: the patrol intervened to break up a fight between boys in a car park on Lungomare Europa. In the video you can see a boy with a light jacket hitting a soldier several times with his fists (apparently in the face) near the Carabinieri car. A little further on, another carabinieri is pulled by another young man in a dark jacket.
Online, both the attack on the Carabinieri and the fact that during the subsequent arrest of the 21-year-old ‘thug’ (the one who punched the soldier and then ended up in handcuffs for violence against a public official) sparked controversy , which occurred shortly afterwards, one of the carabinieri had a taser in his hand. Which was deemed excessive.
“The actions of our military were totally legitimate, aimed solely at restoring public order and safety”, were the words of the mayor of Vieste Giuseppe Nobiletti, who urged “not to fall into easy judgments and understand the complexity of the situations that law enforcement agencies face. I would therefore like to ask our entire community to unite in “condemning violence” and “supporting our police”. Finally, he concluded: “It is inconceivable that those who dedicate their lives to the protection of public safety are attacked in this way. I strongly condemn this act carried out by young people from Vieste and I express my total solidarity with the two injured carabinieri, who had to resort to emergency room treatment and to whom I wish a speedy recovery”.
