ROME – 32 years have passed: it was the afternoon of Saturday 23 May 1992 when 500 kilos of TNT were hidden under the asphalt of the he A29 motorway which connects Palermo to Mazara del Vallo killed the anti-mafia judge Giovanni Falcone. It was 5.58pm, the explosion was terrible: a roar. Falcone’s wife, Francesca Morvillo, and the three men of the escort: Vito Schifani, Rocco Dicillo and Antonio Montinaro also died in the explosion.
The explosive was hidden in a tunnel, the one who pressed the remote control – according to what was ascertained by the judiciary – was Giovanni Brusca. Falcone’s ‘end’ was decreed by the mafia after a series of meetings of the ‘dome’ of Cosa Nostra, a mafia organization led by boss Totò Riina. st
