Ukraine, peace summit in Switzerland without Russia. And without China saying: “Negotiation needed”

Conference dedicated to Ukraine in the Bürgenstock resort, on Lake Lucerne: at the meeting wanted by Zelensky we talk about nuclear power, food and prisoners

BARI – Nuclear safety, export of food production on global markets and release of prisoners of war and removed minors: these are the points today and tomorrow at the center of a conference dedicated to Ukraine in the Bürgenstock resort, on Lake Lucerne, in Switzerland.
The event was called the “global peace summit” by President Volodymyr Zelensky. The three points highlighted are part of a plan in ten proposals articulated by the head of state as early as 2022. Supporting the search for a common platform will be delegations and representatives of dozens of countries, over 90 according to some sources. However, Russia is absent, not invited to the conference, as is China, considered sensitive to Moscow’s reasons in the conflict which worsened in 2022.

For the United States, Vice President Kamala Harris will participate. Antonio Tajani, deputy prime minister and head of foreign affairs, is already present for Italy today. “As demonstrated by the discussions at the summit in Puglia under the leadership of Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni”, the manager said yesterday, referring to the summit in Borgo Egnazia, “our country has put the ‘Ukraine and its reconstruction”. Tajani added: “Together with our partners we support the freedom, sovereignty, independence and territorial integrity of Ukraine, within its internationally recognized borders.”

The request for a withdrawal of Russia’s military forces from the east of the country figures in Zelensky’s plan drawn up in 2022. On the contrary, even yesterday President Vladimir Putin asked for Kiev’s troops to leave “completely” the regions of Donetsk, Lugansk, Zaporizhzhia and Kherson, promising in exchange an immediate ceasefire and the start of a peace negotiation.

China’s perspective was instead reiterated at the UN Security Council, as we also read in the Kyiv Independent newspaper. According to Geng Shuang, Beijing’s deputy representative to the United Nations, Russia and Ukraine should begin negotiations immediately.
Weapons can put an end to a war but are unable to bring about lasting peace” said the diplomat. “China calls on the parties to demonstrate political will, come together and start peace negotiations as soon as possible to reach a ceasefire and stop military actions.”
