Toxic cloud in Guastalla, one hundred students intoxicated. Mayor: “Checks underway”

Entire school campus evacuated shortly before the bell rings

GUASTALLA (REGGIO EMILIA) – A hundred intoxicated students a few minutes before the bell rang, an entire high school complex evacuated to Guastalla, in the province of Reggio Emilia, due to the spread of a toxic cloud in the air. The mayor of the town, Camilla Verona, also announced this: “Shortly before eight o’clock this morning – she writes from her Facebook profile – for reasons yet to be ascertained, in the swimming pool area a cloud with a strong odor which also affected high schools”.
From the first reconstructions, the accident was caused by the hypothesis that it was the spillage of a large quantity of chlorine liquid from the vehicle that was transporting it to the nearby municipal swimming pool or during a transfer phase into the tanks. The mayor therefore assures that the fire brigade immediately rushed to the scene together with the police, the local health authority and all the health institutions were alerted and finally that all checks to protect public health are underway. There would be around a hundred students from the nearby Russell and Carrara schools who were intoxicated due to the fumes, around ten – for now – those transferred to nearby hospitals, dozens who fainted and the children were rescued on site due to illnesses.
