BOLOGNA – From the United States to Türkiye, passing through the United Kingdom and Scandinavia. There will be half the world in Bologna for the first international university chess tournament, organized by the Alma Mater. 18 teams from some of the most prestigious international universities will participate in the competition, scheduled for June 14th to 16th. In addition to the home team of the Alma Mater, there will also be teams from the universities of Yale, Cambridge and Pantheon-Sorbonne, from the University of the Bosphorus (Turkey), from Eindhoven and Maastricht, from Lund ( Sweden), Lublin Catholic University, the Norwegian University of Science and Technology and University College Dublin. Among the Italians there will be representatives of the Polytechnic of Milan, La Sapienza of Rome, Federico II of Naples, the University of Padua and that of Turin.
Each team will be made up of four players: three students and a professor or four students. The tournament will take place in the historic rooms of the University Library of Bologna (Bub), one of the oldest in Italy, which for the occasion will host an exhibition dedicated to rare books and writings on the theme of chess (open from 20 May to 13 June) . The start of the tournament can be followed on site and then online, because access to the room will be reserved only for chess players. The competition will be of a friendly nature, specifies the Alma Mater, because the objective of the tournament is above all to create an opportunity for cultural exchange, academic growth and interdisciplinary relationships between the universities of the world, even in a as innovative as playing chess can be.
