ROME – The trial of the truck driver who ran over and killed Davide Rebellin will be postponed. Because Wolfgang Rieke has been hospitalized since Sunday evening in serious conditions at the Ca’ Foncello hospital in Treviso, after suffering an ischemic stroke just on the eve of the first hearing scheduled for today at the Vicenza court. The German truck driver’s lawyers presented a request for postponement due to legitimate impediment, which was accepted by the judges.
Rebellin was killed on November 30, 2022 in Montebello Vicentino, along regional road 11. Wolfgang Rieke’s truck hit the former champion as he exited a roundabout to enter a parking lot. After running over him, Rebellin Rieke got out of the truck, approached the lifeless body and then got back into the truck to escape. Last March 11, the Vicenza court rejected the plea bargaining request made by Rieke’s lawyers, the same as the one already formulated before the judge at the preliminary hearing. The judges had therefore declared the proceedings open, with the first hearing scheduled for today, in which the examination of the expert reports on the site of the accident and on the truck was expected. Rieke was under house arrest in an apartment in Treviso.
