ROME – The restoration of the courtyard of Palazzo Montecitorio has been completed. The public will be able to admire it from Saturday 18 May, the date of the special edition of Montecitorio a Porte Aperte, on the occasion of the Night of Museums. The courtyard, of ancient Bernini foundation, then shaped by the architect Ernesto Basile, had been completely redeveloped, the last time, in 1967. Since then only safety measures and small maintenance have been carried out. The restoration completed today, based on documentary research and the results of stratigraphic investigations, had the aim of fully bringing to light the image and appearance that Basile had conceived >, through: the recovery of the plaster, some consolidation works, the restoration of missing parts, deep cleaning actions to restore, in particular, balustrades, staircases and decorations to their original appearance. All actions were carried out in agreement with the Special Archaeological, Fine Arts and Landscape Superintendence of Rome.
