The “real” Baby Reindeer sues Netflix for $170 million

Fiona Harvey recognized herself as stalker Martha Scott: "My life was ruined by the TV series"

ROME – The “real” Martha Scott, the stalker protagonist of Baby Reindeer, has decided to sue Netflix for $170 million. The woman who recognized herself in the surprisingly successful series is called Fiona Harvey, and she filed the lawsuit in the District Court of California for “defamation, intentional infliction of emotional distress, gross negligence and violation of your right to privacy”.

The series released this year stars 35-year-old Richard Gadd, a Scottish writer and actor who created the show based on his own experiences as a stalking victim. Harvey publicly identified herself as the female character, but denied being a stalker who allegedly sent Gadd 41,000 emails, hundreds of voicemails and 106 letters. “I don’t think I sent him anything – he said in a recent interview with Piers Morgan – There might have been a couple of emails, joking jokes, but that’s all.”

The complaint states that the woman’s life was ruined by the TV series. “Netflix and Gadd destroyed his reputation, his character and his life.” Harvey is seeking at least $50 million in actual damages, another $50 million in compensatory damages for “mental anguish,” another $50 million as part of the “profits of Baby Reindeer,” and $20 million in punitive damages.

A Netflix spokesperson told the Guardian: “We intend to defend this matter vigorously and support Richard Gadd’s right to tell his story.”
