The mayor of Milan aligns himself with the regional president Attilio Fontana: "There is respect for the rules and this means not respecting them"
MILAN – “Everyone’s political opinions must be respected, but there are rules and something like this is not in the rules, so it is profoundly wrong.” The mayor of Milan Giuseppe Sala aligns himself with the regional president Attilio Fontana and, albeit in softer tones, condemns the display of the Palestinian flag yesterday on the façade of the Cathedral by the candidate for the European elections on the Green list Stefano Apuzzo.
“Places must be monitored, sometimes it is not easy because the whole city cannot be monitored, the fact remains that obviously it is something that we cannot and must not allow”, states Sala on the sidelines of an initiative in Piazzale Selinunte. Apuzzo regularly paid for access to the terrace and then hung the flag overlooking a balcony. Someone points out that the demonstration is an operation by the Greens who are also in the majority at Palazzo Marino. “Yes, yes, but in fact I don’t say that compared to those who are with me they are always right, for the love of heaven – replies the mayor – it’s freedom of thought, but there is respect for the rules and this means not respecting them”.

For the president of the Milanese Jewish community Walker Meghnagi, is mayor Beppe Sala firmly pro-Palestine? “I don’t know why he says this,” the mayor replies to reporters. “Frankly, I deferred to the Council on the display of the flag, I said that it is right for the Council to have its say, so let’s say that I don’t want to respond to controversy with controversy and also out of a sense of maturity given the such a delicate moment, I avoid arguing whenever possible”.
