The new episode of Report is on Sunday: previews

From the national plan to prevent road accidents, to the decimation of buffalo herds in Caserta: appointment on Sunday evening at 8.55pm on Rai 3

ROME – In Italy in 2022 3159 deaths and more than 223 thousand injuries were recorded due to road accidents. Throughout Europe in the same year almost 21 thousand people died in road collisions< /strong>, there are several million injured. For this reason, the European Commission has launched a series of actions to halve deaths and injuries by 2030. Italy is also participating with its own national plan, which however is struggling to get started. Indeed, the steering committee has never held an operational meeting. A reality at the center of the investigation “In the right place” by Giulio Valesini and Cataldo Ciccolella, with the collaboration of Evanthia Georganopoulou, who opens the appointment with ‘Report’, the weekly magazine hosted by Sigfrido Ranucci, broadcast on Sunday 9 June at 8.55pm on Rai 3. In the rest of Europe the reduction in victims between 2019 and 2022 is 9%, while Italy has not seen any improvement. Indeed, the trend for 2024 showsa significant increase in deaths and injuries. Is it a pure fatality? No. The causes are distracted driving or driving under the influence of drugs, dangerous technologies, the myth of speed. But also poorly designed cities, outdated laws, a shortage of law enforcement personnel and a cultural war on fines that has produced the Fleximan phenomenon, the anti-hero who destroys speed cameras. In the early 2000s, however, with the introduction of the tutor and the points-based driving licence, deaths had been halved. Report dedicates a special investigation to the topic of road safety, while the Senate is about to approve a new highway code which is not free from contradictions. We will also see some bold new mobility policies that are capable of making a difference. 

Then, the investigation “Sentient Buffaloes” by Bernardo Iovene, with the collaboration of Lidia Galeazzo and Greta Orsi, focuses on the conditions of the farms. Brucellosis and Tuberculosis are the infections that are decimating buffalo herds in the province of Caserta. Until 2013 the animals could be vaccinated and the diseases had almost disappeared, but since 2014 the new plan established the adoption of culling to eradicate infections and abolished vaccination. Since then, almost one hundred thousand buffaloes have been slaughtered and over 300 companies have closed down. Farmers are broke and are asking for new analysis methods given that 98.5 percent of post-mortem buffaloes are healthy and go on the beef marketmanaged by the slaughterhouses that benefit from them. The investigation starts from the situation of the farms in the area and develops on the contradictions found by the Council of State which ordered further analyzes for 2 farms that appealed, from which it emerged that those 700 buffaloes condemned to slaughter were in reality healthy. The Campania Region does not back down and, under the pressure of the farmers, the Minister of Health has appointed a national commissioner who according to the farmers should sanction the failure of the regional plan
