The harness, the braking: what doesn’t add up in the death of Ghizlane who fell from the zipline: the investigation is for manslaughter

The investigation by the Sondrio Prosecutor's Office into the death of the woman who fell from the Bema zipline hypothesizes manslaughter: checks on the harness but also on the dynamics of the fall, which would have been preceded by braking

BOLOGNA – The autopsy on the body of Ghizlane Moutahir will take place on Friday 10 May: Ghizlane is the 41-year-old woman who on Sunday she died after a fatal flightfrom the ‘Fly Emotion’ zipline in Valtellina. She fell into the void, falling into the woods below, while she was having the incredible experience of ‘flying’ for a kilometer and a half suspended from a steel cable. The investigation opened by the Sondrio Prosecutor’s Office to clarify what went wrong hypothesizes manslaughter. The plant is under seizure.

THE CHECKS ON THE HARNESS

There are many doubts at the moment. First of all, checks must be made on the harness which should have secured his body during the crossing. And who, instead, after the fatal fall, remained attached to the rope. Was it faulty or too old? Also under the scrutiny of the investigators are the harness fastening operations carried out by the staff of the Fly Emotion facility, in the province of Sondrio, which connects Bema (starting point) and Albaredo to San Marco (point arrival): was it fastened correctly? Another hypothesis is that of illness, which could have caused the woman’s fall. It is precisely on the illness that the investigators expect an answer from the autopsy on Friday: the experts will try to understand whether the woman felt ill before falling into the void.

THE FLIGHT OF GHIZLANE FROM FORTY METERS OF HEIGHT

The steel cable is located above theBitto valley and the woods below, at the highest point, are 230 meters away. Ghizlane Moutahir, of Moroccan origin, fell from a height of thirty-forty meters just before reaching the arrival station.

THE VIDEO SHOT BY THE GRANDdaughter

The prosecutor’s magistrates have acquired for the investigation documents a video, shot by the woman’s niece, who was waiting for the 41-year-old upon arrival and who had experienced the ‘flight’ shortly before of the woman. In fact, her nieces had done it before her and were waiting for her in Albaredo for San Marco. In the images, you can see the tragic fall of the 41-year-old.
Some witnesses, already on Sunday, would have said that Ghizlane at a certain point was in a vertical position during the flight: if it were true, from this incorrect position (the crossing must be done in lying position, with legs secured) could have caused an imbalance in the weight and the consequent fall.

THE BRAKING AND THE PANIC CRISIS?

One of the hypotheses that the investigators are working on is the fact that, shortly before the fall, there would have been a sort of braking during the crossing of the 41-year-old, who therefore found herself hanging, still, at a height of forty metres. above the woods. It wasn’t long before we arrived. The woman may have been scared and, perhaps in the grip of a panic attack, she may have tried to unhook herself from the harness, perhaps managing to free her legs. Hence the upright position that some witnesses spoke of? These are all aspects to clarify and verify. In any case, it remains a mystery that the woman could possibly have completely unhooked herself from the harness (left hanging from the steel cable as it fell), which should not be possible. In the plant, which has been in operation for 13 years, accidents had never occurred.
