Government working to postpone the tax on sugary drinks, introduced by the Conte Government in 2020 and never entered into force

ROME – The Presidency of the Council and the Ministry of Economyare working to find a solution that allows the so-called ‘sugar tax’, the tax on sugary drinks, to be postponed until 2025. This is what we learn from Palazzo Chigi sources. This tax, together with the ‘plastic tax’, was introduced with the 2020 Budget Law by the Conte II Government, but until now it has been subject to continuous postponements. With the 2024 budget, the last extension is set for July 2024, the sources at Palazzo Chigi recall.

With the Government’s amendment to the Superbonus Decree, changes have been made that have postponed the entry into force of the ‘plastic tax’ to July 2026, while the ‘sugar tax’ is expected to become operational from next July but in a reduced form. However, the Government is now working to find the cover to be able to postpone the entry into force of the tax again, which it is worth reiterating – conclude the Palazzo Chigi sources – was introduced by the Conte Government, but never entered into force since 2020 to date.
