The Cannes Film Festival begins: here are the films in the running for the Palme d’Or (Italy is rooting for a mermaid)

There are just a few hours left until the start of the 2024 Cannes Film Festival. The jury has the task of evaluating 22 films in competition

RIMINI – There are just a few hours left until the start of the Cannes Film Festival 2024 which kicks off the dance this evening for its 77th edition. Until May 25, 12 days of screenings, VIP catwalks, flashes and obviously, awards ceremonies. The opening ceremony is scheduled for this evening, with the first highly anticipated red carpet. And the first film in review is “Le Deuxieme Acte” by Quentin Dupieux (out of competition) and, again on the debut day of the Festival, the diva Mayrl Streep will receive the Palme d’Or for lifetime achievement. To the jury chaired by the director Greta Gerwig (“her” is the film “Barbie”, but she has much more on her CV), whose jurors include our local Pierfrancesco Favino and the very French Eva Green, the task of evaluating 22 films in competition.

Representing the Italian flag, “Parthenope”, the new Sorrento fairy tale (by director Paolo Sorrentino) whose protagonist is the mermaid Partenope< /strong>, (played by Celeste della Porta and Stefania Sandrelli) . However, he will have to deal with films signed by big names such as Francis Ford Coppola and David Cronenberg. The first signs “Megalopolis“: a 120 million dollar film and a cast that can count, among others, Adam Driver, Giancarlo Esposito, Laurence Fishburne, Aubrey Plaza, Shia LaBeouf and Dustin Hoffman. While Cronenberg is in the running with “The Shrouds” and with a cast composed of Vincent Cassel, Diane Kruger, Guy Pearce and Sandrine Holt. Among the big names in the running for the Palme d’Or is also Yorgos Lanthimos who returns to Cannes together with his museEmma Stonewith a film that has already caused a lot of talk of himself “Kind of Kindness” (Poor Creatures).  “Marcello Mio” by Christophe Honoré on also speaks a bit about Italy >Marcello Mastroianni, with his daughter Chiara and Catherine Deneuve.

THE STARS EXPECTED ON THE CROISETTE
Finally, the star parade is highly anticipated: fromEmma Stone to George Lucas, in view of the delivery of the Palme d’Honneur for lifetime achievement on the closing day of the festival, and then Uma Thurman and Richard Gere will pair up in Schrader’s film. Of note is the return to the cinema, after years of absence of Demi Moore. Finally, new entries in Cannes are Anya Taylor Joy (protagonist of the successful series “The Queen of Chess”) and the former Thor Chris Hemsworth, expected for the world premiere of Furiosa: a Mad Max saga by George Miller, prequel to the previous “Mad Max: Fury Road”.
