The abortion case breaks out at the G7: Macron-Meloni clash. At the leaders’ dinner there was frost between the two

The tension between French President Emmanuel Macron and Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni who was hosting the G7 has not abated

ROME – Despite the reassurance that no will take “no step back from the Hiroshima document” and that the issue relating to abortion in the final declaration of the G7 has “been whipped up like cream”, as reported by Italian sources at the summit of world leaders, the tension between French President Emmanuel Macron and Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni who was doing the honors has not abated. From France came “a great incorrectness”, when the Head of the Elysée in the press point with journalists on the fact that the word ‘abortion’ had disappeared from the final document declared: “Yes, I’m sorry. I’m sorry but I respect it because it was a sovereign choice of your people.” Meloni’s response was not long in coming, saying: “There is no reason to argue about issues that we have already agreed on for some time. And I believe it is profoundly wrong, in difficult times like these, campaign using such a precious forum“.

After a day of great tension at the G7 Macron and Meloni met at the gala dinner at the Castello Svevo in Brindisi offered to world leaders by the President of the Republic, Sergio Mattarella. Upon his arrival, Macron stopped to talk to the President. The two greet each other warmly but the meeting with our Prime Minister is anything but idyllic: on Meloni’s face you can read all the disappointment created by the statements. Forced smiles, a partially tolerated hand kiss and a cold handshake is all that the two leaders managed to exchange. At the ritual photo the two, close in the opening photo of the proceedings, found themselves separated by President Mattarella.
