Over 95% of food production depends on the soil which, in its first 5 centimeters, hosts 90% of the planet’s biodiversity in terms of living organisms, which are able to regulate the nutrients essential for crops. It is a precious resource, yet today over 33% of the world’s soil is affected by severe limitations for food production and 500 hectares are lost every half hour: 75 billion tonnes of arable land less every year, a globally, they cost approximately $400 billion in lost agricultural production. These are the themes addressed in the presentation event of the scientific symposium celebrating the centenary of Iuss, the International Union of Soil Sciences, which brings together the national societies of 76 countries around the world, which will be held in Florence from 19 to 21 May. The event was organized in collaboration with Crea Agricoltura e Ambiente. “In 100 years of soil science we have gone from considering soil from an invulnerable substrate to a resource to be defended. In Europe alone, around 60% of soils are degraded, with a cost to the community of over 50 billion euros per year “, declared Giuseppe Corti, head of the Iuss Secretariat, director of Crea and president of the Italian Society of Soil Science.

The French sailing ship ‘Belem’, with the Olympic torch on board bound for Marseille, faced navigation in one of the busiest stretches of sea in the world, the Strait of Messina. The convoy was constantly followed by the Messina Coast Guard and the Strait Maritime Authority, from whose Vts (Vessel Traffic Service) control center there was a continuous exchange of communications useful for guaranteeing the safety of navigation of the Olympic torch, as every other vessel that generally passes through the area: data such as speed, route and estimated travel times of the vessels are in fact managed in real time.
