THE REAL EMERGENCY? THERE ARE ONLY 50-60 BEARS REMAINING IN ABRUZZO

The WWF experts have installed around 90 new acoustic and visual deterrents along some provincial roads in Abruzzo, which cross natural areas affected by the presence of the bear, which will serve to warn moving animals of the danger represented by the passage of vehicles. The activity is part of the ‘Wwf Orso 2X50’ project, which aims to double the small population of the Marsican brown bear which could disappear forever given its population of just 50-60 individuals. From 2019 to today, more than 80 km of roads have been made safe by the WWF in the bear’s expansion areas in the Apennines. Meanwhile, the mural by the Roman street artist Lucamaleonte was inaugurated at the entrance to the small town of Anversa degli Abruzzi. The work is a suggestive close-up of bears accompanied by some symbols of the typical nature of this area, the colorful wallcreeper and the Sagittarius cornflower.

FABRICS, REUSE RELATIONSHIP ‘FROM NICHE TO MAINSTREAM’

‘From niche to mainstream’ is the title of the new edition of the national report on reuse. The main focus concerns the circular shift of the European Union and large industries, due to geoeconomic reasons as well as an ecological megatrend of public opinion. And so Reuse, from a niche market, becomes the priority of the big decision makers. The report shows that Italy has declared to the EU a volume of 232 thousand tonnes of reusable waste per year, but this data, source Ispra, only highlights the material processed by second-hand shops on behalf of third parties, when in reality the new report shows that the volume would rise to at least 500 thousand tons, 8 kg per inhabitant, if the work of street vendors and waste pickers were also taken into consideration.

BIODIVERSITY, GREENPEACE PRESENTS THE BEE FOREST

On the occasion of World Bee Day and World Biodiversity Day, Greenpeace Italy presented the Bosco delle Api project, an initiative that offers a concrete example of how it is possible to create more sustainable and resilient communities. Specifically, the Bee Forest is a project to promote food forests, multifunctional cultivated systems that simulate, on a small scale, a forest ecosystem. In this type of environment, fruit plants, medicinal herbs, berries, vegetables and flowers coexist synergistically with spontaneous plants and animals, creating a habitat rich in biodiversity. “The Bee Forest is not only a refuge for pollinators, but also a biomonitoring place open to all those who wish to explore nature, spaces for meetings, educational activities and cultural initiatives, thus contributing to raising awareness among the population”, declares Martina Villages, Forests campaign by Greenpeace Italy.
