ROME – Italy is betting on Mauritania, with the recent opening of one of its embassies and with an official visit to Nouakchott scheduled before the “summer break”: this was underlined by Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani, responding to a question from Dire agency on the Sahel. The solicitation concerned the latest news arriving from Burkina Faso, where the military junta in power has suspended the licenses of some foreign newspapers following press reports with reports of killings of civilians by the army. “The situation throughout sub-Saharan Africa is complicated” highlighted Tajani. “We must prevent these countries from ending up in the hands of Iran, Russia and China and therefore we must dialogue, speak and try to be present”.

VISITING NOUAKCHOTT

Then the reference to the Nouakchott government. “We count a lot on Mauritania, we have opened our embassy and before the summer break I will certainly be there on an official visit” said Tajani. “I recently met Foreign Minister Mohamed Salem Ould Marzouk, who was our guest at the G7 as rotating president of the African Union”. According to Tajani, “stability in the area is fundamental”. The minister again: “It’s a complicated job but we give it our all; Italy wants to play a leading role”. The Rome embassy in Mauritania has been operational since the end of 2023.
