The little ones are the children of one of the couples present in the park of the headquarters of the Sicily Region which has now become the permanent home of about ten flamingos

PALERMO – Happy event in theGardens of Palazzo d’Orleans, seat of the presidency of theSicily Region in Palermo. This year too, the animal care staff were able to witness the birth of pink flamingo chicks (Phoenicopterus roseus). After more than forty days of hatching, some of the pairs that had laid gave birth to five young, which currently appear with gray plumage. The director of the facility, Vincenzo Guella, gave the news.

The flamingos have been present for several years within the Gardens and are part of a group made up of around ten individuals belonging to the Lauricella ornithological collection. It is not the first time that they have reproduced there, as well as other species considered threatened or endangered. All births, with the scientific support of Professor Mario Lo Valvo, head of the Applied Zoology Laboratory of the University of Palermo, are part of the conservation programs and purposes carried out by the park management.< /p>

The pink flamingo, although present in some humid areas of Sicily, in the wild has begun to reproduce naturally on a regular basis on the island from 2015 to today, with success only in the oriented nature reserve Saline di Priolo, where there is a population estimated at a few hundred pairs. However, it is possible to observe these elegant birds all year round in the Saline di Trapani reserve and in the Stagnone di Marsala reserve.
