ROME – A reprisal against the inhabitants of the village, who were on the side of the Sudanese army: this, according to local sources from the Dire agency, operators of a humanitarian organisation, is the dynamics of the killings carried out this week in Wad Al-Noora, in the State of Jazira.
The Resistance Committees based in the local capital Wad Madani were the first to reveal the facts, reporting a toll of around one hundred victims. The Sudanese sources add other elements: “In Wad Al-Noora there was a base of Islamist groups supporting the previous regime of President Omar Al-Bashir who had recruited many villagers to fight against theSupport Forces quick“. The reference is to the RSF, paramilitary units led by General Mohamed Hamdan Dagalo, known as Hemeti. These fighters have been engaged in clashes against the army in multiple areas of the country since April 2023, from the capital Khartoum to the western region of Darfur. According to United Nations estimates, since last year as a result of the conflict, more than eight million people have been forced to leave their homes and sometimes flee abroad. Wad Al-Noora is located in an area with a Kawahla majority, one of the main Arab communities inhabiting the regions of Jazira, White Nile and Kordofan. According to the sources, “the RSF targeted the village for supporting the army although this obviously constitutes no justification for the mass killing of innocent civilians.” With Dire, videos of recruiters and also translations from Arabic are shared. “In the videos”, the sources underline, “the leaders of the group say that Wad Al-Noora is with the military and that it is out of reach of the RSF”. According to testimonies released by international media, the paramilitaries raided the village in about forty vehicles. According to these reports, the men also opened fire on women and children.
