ROME – “It is a pleasure to meet Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni in Rome. We discussed Italy’s numerous contributions to NATO and our preparations for the NATO summit in July”. The general secretary of NATO, Jens Stoltenberg, who was received today at Palazzo Chigi, wrote this on X.
“When leaders meet in Washington, we will make further decisions to support Ukraine, strengthen our defenses and collaborate more with partners,” concludes Stoltenberg.
NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg praised “Italy’s support to Ukraine, including the supply of a SAMP/T air defense system with France. Italy also signed a bilateral agreement on security with Ukraine, helping to strengthen Ukraine’s defenses, support its arms industry and counter hybrid threats”.
Stoltenberg also praised Meloni for “Italy’s numerous contributions to the Alliance , including the leadership of the NATO battlegroup in Bulgaria and the contribution of forces to the battlegroups in Hungary and Latvia”.
Italy, recalled the NATO secretary general, “also regularly participates in Baltic Air Policing and NATO maritime operations”. Stoltenberg then thanked Italy for “its commitment to the NATO peacekeeping mission KFOR in Kosovo and the NATO training mission in Iraq. He also welcomed Italy’s key role in developing the NATO approach NATO towards its southern neighbourhood”.
