South Africa, entrepreneurs warn Mandela’s party: “No to nationalizations”

Warning on the eve of the legislative elections, considered the least predictable since the end of the apartheid regime

ROME – Warning to the African National Congress (ANC), the party that belonged to Nelson Mandela, in power since 1994, on the eve of the legislative elections: it was addressed by Busisiwe Mavuso , CEO of Business Leadership South Africa (BLSA), an alliance of large businesses and multinationals. The leader warned of an alliance between the ANC and the Economic Freedom Fighters (Eff), a left-wing formation that has so far been in opposition. “We will not support an administration that embraces policies of mass economic destruction,” said Mavuso, interviewed by the News24 information portal.

The clash concerns the requests for nationalization at the center of the EFF’s electoral programme, in particular for the mining and banking sectors. Their demands also include the introduction of more onerous taxes for large companies. According to some observers, tomorrow’s vote is the least predictable in the last 30 years, therefore since the end of the apartheid regime. It is not excluded that the ANC will lose its absolute majority in parliament and be forced to form alliances. In addition to the EFF, among the opposition groups of national importance are Democratic Allianceand umKhonto we Sizwe. There are around 28 million registered voters for tomorrow’s elections. Since 2018, South Africa has been led by Cyril Ramaphosa, a politician with a past as a trade unionist and also as an entrepreneur.
