PALERMO – The Sicilian Regional Assembly declares its fight against absentee deputies at the time of voting in the chamber. In fact, starting from May, the new rules voted unanimously by the Ars Presidency Council will come into force: deputies who are absent during the votes in the chamber will receive a fine of 180 euros.
Limitations also for leaves: no longer two per month, but only one. Similar sanctions are also foreseen for absences in the parliamentary commissions of Palazzo dei Normanni. The news was recalled by the president of the Sicilian Parliament, Gaetano Galvagno, with a Facebook post. “I strongly wanted this provision to come into force on May 1st, as a sign of respect towards Sicilian workers who often carry out their tasks in difficult conditions“, wrote Galvagno -. We institutional representatives and legislators have delicate tasks, but at the same time we must be accountable to the voters who chose us to hold a prestigious position and to all Sicilians”.
Galvagno then added: “Presence in the chamber for the approval of good laws is what citizens expect from us. It is the least we can do. It is a duty! The decision to introduce sanctions for those who are absent it was voted unanimously in the Presidential Council, confirming the desire to undertake rigorous action which is shared by all political forces I believe it is a good signal, which becomes a concrete act on a day full of meaning”.
