CARNATE (MB) – Sarno Display (a Lombard company of the Venetian Gatto group), specialized in the design and production of visual displays for eyewear, cosmetics and jewellery has closed 2023 with 16.5 million euros in turnover. During the same year, CO2eq emissions were reduced: in absolute value, the carbon footprint, i.e. the data relating to greenhouse gas emissions, per euro of turnover, was almost halved.
The results were the subject of a lesson held by the administrator of Sarno, Cristian Paravano, to third-year students of a three-year course in the socio-economic field at the Catholic University of Milan. A different lectio from the usual case studies on the financial successes of Made in Italy entrepreneurship. Because it is enriched by the concrete example in the field that Sarno Display has been pursuing for several years. Paravano also holds the role of CSO, Chief Sustainability Office, in the company. The company is certified B Corp, and meets social and environmental performance standards.
“My speech at the Cattolica – explains Paravano – combined the story of my professional evolution, from studies to the world of work, as is usual on these occasions. With a look at the sustainable approach according to Sarno Display. I seen participation, involvement. It wasn’t the first time I spoke to the students of that university, but on this last occasion I had an important message to convey: you can generate a notable economic result in a company, especially if you work hard. attention to people and the environment“.
The inspiration, brought to the field by Paravano, is John Elkington’s ‘3P’ model, principles around which the company restructuring was started: Performance, People, Planet. Starting from performance, Sarno has exceptional numbers: in 2023 its turnover grew by 63% compared to 2022, with a positive gross operating margin and finally with a profit. For the good of the planet, Paravano is applying a complex recipe: “The objective is to reach zero emissions by 2030. I am confident that we will succeed well before that. At the moment the amount of investments for the transition in the name of sustainability is significant. By the first half of 2025, Sarno’s CO2 emissions will be more than halved again”.
“In our transformation plan there are: roofs with photovoltaic systems, renewal of lighting, efficiency improvement of machinery which will be powered entirely with self-produced energy or, when not available, coming from 100% renewable. At the moment these technologies already exist, but with our multidisciplinary team I intend to increase investments and results in energy saving”.
For this purpose, in fact, Sarno Display makes use of the most innovative technologies, for example, the company is being mapped to understand which departments consume the most energy. Furthermore, home automation is already active to control and eliminate waste, “from coffee machines to turning off the lights and closing the windows“.
All this is possible thanks also to the collaboration of the ‘third P’, that is, people. For Sarno employees last year it produced an important performance bonus “the positive impact on the community”. For this reason, the latest corporate gifts for Easter were ‘reduced’ to a symbolic Easter egg, because a large part of the budget reserved for the holiday was donated to a community in Ecuador, which has long been supported by the group’s companies.
