ROME – A few hours after the results of the European elections which decreed the success of Giorgia Meloni, the mural ‘Santa Giorgia’ by the artist aleXsandro Palombo appeared in the center of Milan in front of Piazza San Babila. > which portrayed the Prime Minister as an icon of contemporary politics, mixing it with the figurative universe of the great art classics. And so Giorgia appears as a secular Madonna with a large pro-European halo while she holds the breastfeeding child in her arms, a work that addresses the birth issue, a theme dear to the Prime Minister, while a few weeks ago the City of Milan said no to a statue dedicated to motherhood. During the press conference for taking the field in the European elections, the Premier defined herself as one of the people, the artist decided to immortalize her in the guise of the Madonna exactly as happened in the 1600s when the protagonists of the sacred portraits and the Madonnas created by Caravaggio were not idealized and unreal figures, but people of the people, common, common women.

In May 2023 aleXsandro Palombo had created ‘Power is Female‘ a mural on surrogate motherhood portraying Giorgia Meloni together with the leader of the PD Elly Schlein, both shoulder to shoulder and pregnant, on Schlein’s lap the writing ‘My uterus my choice ‘ and on Meloni’s ‘Not for rent’. Only a few weeks ago, a few hours after the announcement of Giorgia’s candidacy in the next European elections, aleXsandro Palombo had immortalized Meloni as Marilyn Monroe by portraying the Prime Minister on a panel placed on a ventilation grate of the Milanese subway with the iconic dress white lifting up like in the film ‘The Seven Year Itch’ but in this case revealing a pair of underwear with the EU flag. The work had been vandalized in just 24 hours with hateful writings and insults against the President and a black transforming the Prime Minister into Wonder Woman.
