ROME – An offer of 250 euros and a free flight. This is what Ryanair proposed to those who would have gotten off the plane departing from Bergamo towards Palma de Mallorca last 12 June. The reason? Due to a mix-up at the gate, the flight was overbooked and would not have been able to take off withone more passenger.

A Ryanair Bergamo-Palma de Mallorca flight was scheduled for June 12th. The plane was full, ready for take-off, when it emerged that an overbooking had occurred. The company, in fact, had sold one more ticket. Two passengers were then asked to get off, but when they refused, the stewardess was forced to ask if anyone on board was willing to get off. The volunteer would have received “a refund of 250 euros and the next flight for free“. A decision to be made within 20 minutes, after which, if no one had come forward, the plane would not have been able to take off.

The episode was filmed by a passenger and the video went viral on TikTok. Eventually, a volunteer stepped forward, enabling the plane to take off normally.
Very often airlines sell more tickets than the number of seats actually available. This practice is not illegal, and is used to make up for the eventuality that some passengers do not show up at the time of boarding.
However, if all passengers show up, theplane cannot take off with more people than allowed. In this case, some passengers may be denied boarding, depending on seat availability. Each company offers compensation in case ofoverbooking, flight cancellation or significant delay.
