ROME – Opposition attacks on Daniela Santanchè, the Minister of Tourism for whom today the news arrived of the request for trial, for fraud, by the Milan Prosecutor’s Office for the Covid funds affair. Many are talking about resignation (and “immediate”), attacking the government by saying that a member accused of fraud “cannot be a minister“. The dem secretary Elly Schlein asks that Giorgia Meloni ask her to resign. Meanwhile, the words of Antonio Tajani come from the majority, who reiterates guaranteeism, for Santanchè as for everyone. And he says: the affair “does not create any embarrassment for the government“.
“Fratelli d’Italia is that party that expresses a minister with a request for indictment for INPS fraud on Covid funds, and at the same time nominates an anti-vax just under Giorgia Meloni. We expect the Prime Minister have a minimum of respect for the institutions and ask for Daniela Santanché’s resignation”.
The Santanchè affair “does not create any embarrassment for the Government, it is a question of personal sensitivity, Minister Santanchè will decide. I am an absolute guarantee and I am with everyone, I never go to to rage against people: I did so with the Decaro affair and I didn’t exploit it, I said that there was a political problem but I never raged against him or against others because it’s not right to do so. Then everyone has the right to do so his sensitivity, but I believe that today citizens want solutions, not fights, arguments and exploitation”. This was said by the deputy prime minister and foreign minister, Antonio Tajani, national secretary of Forza Italia, on the sidelines of the presentation of the book ‘In name of freedom’, by Paolo Del Debbio, underway in the Chamber of Parliamentary Groups of the Chamber of Deputies, regarding the request for indictment against the Minister of Tourism, Daniela Santanchè, by the Milan Prosecutor’s Office as part of the investigation into the use of Covid funds.
For Tajani “there is no political problem, the Government is moving forward, it is enough to see the electoral results as they are. I am traveling around Italy and I see what the consensus is around the Government: it is the people who decide, it may bother some but in a democracy there is a majority and there is an opposition, and it seems to me that the majority is widening and the opposition is narrowing”.
On the requests of Santanchè’s resignation by the minority, the deputy prime minister added: “The opposition asks for resignation every two minutes. There is a request, then when there is a decision we will talk about it”.
“The question that Prime Minister Meloni should ask herself in these hours is very simple: can a person who goes to trial accused of defrauding the State continue to be Minister of the Republic? And the answer that should give and what should give to the country: no, in the most absolute way”. Nicola Fratoianni of the Alleanza Verdi Sinistra writes it in X.
“A minister who swears by the Constitution after having defrauded the INPS, therefore the State, the citizens and the voters themselves is the symbol of this right-wing government. A government that immediately reneged on the promises made after the polls and he thought he could survive only to occupy all the positions of power, thinking of maintaining consensus with bribes, demagogy and amnesties. Giorgia Meloni will not oust Daniela Santanchè because she would admit her own failure”: this is what the PD deputy and Dem secretary of Tuscany declares. Emiliano Fossi on the indictment for fraud of the owner of the Department of Tourism.
“The credibility of the Italian government cannot be continually jeopardized by the Santanchè case. The prosecutor’s request for indictment against the minister adds nothing to what we have been saying for months: resignation is an obligatory path to a question of respectability of politics. Not everything can always count: the minister’s “omissions” and lies in recent months before Parliament have aggravated an already too opaque picture. Without forgetting that the minister is also in a clear conflict of interest to the issue of beach concessions, Giorgia Meloni cannot ignore it today, it is a question of credibility of the institutions. In a note, M5s MP Emma Pavanelli says
“We were waiting for the dutiful, late resignation of Santanchè. Instead, an angry reply arrived from a spokesperson for the minister, paid with the money of all Italians evidently not to represent every citizen with his actions, but to create partisan controversy , or rather of party. The secretary of the Democratic Party has asked for a step back in the face of a request for indictment for a minister, whose position becomes more and more untenable with each passing day, to use a common-sense euphemism, respect of the Italians, minimal decorum. The response is the most obvious proof of the lack of sense of the minister’s institutions, including the spokesperson; This was declared by Democratic Party senator Filippo Sensi.
