POPE FRANCIS: “CONTRACONCEPTIVES AND WEAPONS ARE AGAINST LIFE”
“Despite many words and much commitment” the birth rate curve is not inverted, to the point that Italy seems to be “progressively losing its hope for tomorrow”. Pope Francis does not mince his words as he, guest of the General States of Birth, asks for “greater commitment from governments” to combat the decline in births. The pontiff speaks of “selfishness and consumerism” as evils that “satiate” people and drive away the desire to form a family. Francis also complains about “investments that give more income”, i.e. weapons and contraceptives. The former, he says, “destroy life”, the latter “prevent it”. Meanwhile, clashes between police and demonstrators who were trying to reach the Conciliazione auditorium to protest against the event. A girl was injured in the head.
PUGLIA. EMILIANO IN ANTI-MAFIA: “NO INVESTIGATION ON ME”
There is “no investigation of any kind underway” regarding the Puglia region and its president. Michele Emiliano, at a hearing in the Anti-Mafia commission, asks deputies and senators to “tell Italy that the president of the Puglia region is not under investigation for anything, nor is the municipality of Bari, because – he says – I have the impression that there has been confusion”. In his long speech, the governor claims political and judicial activity based on “social anti-mafia”, for which he believes the establishment of a national agency is necessary. Emiliano then explains that the meeting with the boss Capriati’s sister “had the sole purpose of making it clear that the situation had changed, never to ask for protection”. And speaking of the demonstration in support of Decaro, he does not rule out “giving wrong details” about the presence of the mayor of Bari at that meeting.
LIGURIA. SALVINI DEFENDS TOTI, MUSUMECI ATTACKS THE MAGISTRATES
The controversies involving Giovanni Toti, the president of Liguria who ended up under house arrest, do not subside. The opposition insists that the governor resigns. Two important members of the government have been rallying around Toti for days: ministers Nordio and Crosetto, who have expressed doubts about the times and methods used by the magistrates.
