MOTHERS IN ANCIENT GREECE AND THE ROMAN ERA< /strong>

It must be said that the decision to ‘dedicate’ a day to mothers is truly ancient, so much so that already in ancient Greece one day of the year was dedicated to the figure of the mother: the holiday coincided with the celebrations for goddess Rhea, the mother of all Gods. Traditionally, it fell on the Ides of March, which in the Roman calendar corresponded to March 15th. In ancient Rome, however, at the end of March the divinity Cybele, symbol of Nature and all mothers, was celebrated for an entire week. On March 1st, however, the Matronalia was celebrated, in fact a holiday dedicated to the matrons, i.e. wives and mothers.
