ROME – While a delegation from Qatar travels to Cairo, Egypt, to promote the ceasefire in the Strip, the Gaza Ministry of Health announces that 32 people were killed in the attacks in the last 24 hours. The ministry, led by Hamas representatives, thus updated to 34,654 the toll of Palestinian deaths since Israel launched a military operation against the enclave, in response to the attack < strong>suffered by armed militiamen last October 7, in which 1200 people lost their lives. The estimate of Palestinian injuries has also increased: with the last 41 yesterday, it now stands at 77,908 people. As Al Jazeera reports, representatives of Hamas are also expected at today’s talks in Cairo, called to avoid the armed attack that Israel has threatened to launch on Rafah if an agreement is not reached by the week that allows the Israeli citizens still held hostage in Gaza to be brought home. “We are determined to guarantee an agreement in order to satisfy the demands of the Palestinians” the Palestinian movement says in a statement. Last week, the Israeli government presented a draft agreement described as “generous” by the United States, but which did not convince Hamas, which is calling for a permanent ceasefire and the withdrawal of all military forces from the Strip in exchange for the release of the hostages.
However, although the Israeli military operation has not yet been launched in its entirety, raids and artillery fire have been reported from Rafah: last night a civilian house and three people were hit who resided inside have died. The latter are part of the 11 killed in total last night. Some of these lost their lives in Khan Younis, still in the south of the Strip: although they were transported to the European hospital, health workers said they were unable to intervene due to the lack of medicines and medical equipment. Other people instead died in attacks reported in the central area of Gaza.
