In a recent interview given to Walter Veltroni for Corriere della Sera, Stefano Belisari, aka Elio de Le Storie Tese, talked about his son Dante (14 years old) and his experience as the father of an autistic boy. “We noticed it very soon. It was my wife who perceived some anomalies in Dante’s behavior. I consoled her, told her that everything would normalize. But we have twins and the differences, in the growth process, were clearly visible It was difficult to find someone who could give us a clear diagnosis and who could direct us. There is no telephone number to call, no address to go to. You immediately realize that a child’s autism is combined with the absolute loneliness of parents. And this applies to any type of disability.” Then some advice to parents: “act quickly, don’t wait until the age of three, don’t put it off. We saw that Dante had an obsessive attention to the spinning tops, he also spun around and never stopped doing it. He had attention to the things and not for people. Autism can lead to serious relational difficulties, including mental, motor and cognitive delays”.
The frontman of Elio e Le Storie tese explained that Dante “is now 14 years old, he is aware. Even too much, he says it continuously. He has done an impressive job, a heartbreaking effort. Even in this, autistic kids pay a price compared to their peers. For him everything was hard: putting on a shirt, going to the bathroom, talking. He worked hard, but we were able to allow him to be followed money? Here too, just when the public hand should rebalance the differences, social inequalities are instead accentuated. There are associations, but they are private. There is nothing public that addresses the problem of autism and is close to families”.
