ROME – The“worsening humanitarian tragedy”in the Gaza Strip is behind Turkey’s decision to suspend trade relations with Israel: the government announced it in a statement of Ankara. The decision affects bilateral trade which in 2023 reached a value of seven billion dollars. Turkey’s Ministry of Commerce stressed that the measure will remain in force until Tel Avivguarantees “a sufficient and continuous flow” of humanitarian aidfor the benefit of the Palestinian population.

Israel condemned the decision. His Foreign Minister, Israel Katz, accused Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan of acting like “a dictator”. The stop to trade relations with Tel Aviv, according to this version, would contravene the “interests of the Turkish people and entrepreneurs” and ignore “international trade agreements”.
