ROME – “A letter that was published by some press agencies and in some newspapers urged me not to lock myself up in, as it has been defined, the ivory tower of the Rectorate”. And seeing a sign that “basically asked me what I think of what is happening in Gaza and this is what is being recorded in various universities at the moment. I don’t want to leave this question unanswered. The condition of the question of peace in the Middle East, of the right to existence and security of Israel, of the rights of the Palestinian people. And among these rights is that of having a state in which to recognize oneself. It is an issue that the international community feels with great concernand not from today. And not only since the murder of so many defenseless people by Hamas triggered a spiral of frightening violence.” The President of the Republic Sergio Mattarella says this while speaking at the ‘Graduate’s Day’ ceremony at Sapienza, replying to the kids from the ‘Free Palestine’ garrison who had sent him a letter. “What I think about what is happening in Gaza – he adds – I have said publicly and not in fortuitous or informal circumstances, but on fully significant occasions, as in the speech I made 8 days ago” at the general assembly of The UN “with the letter that the day before yesterday I sent to the President of the Republic of Israel also reiterating the request for an immediate ceasefire”.

“For our Republic, all violations of human rights must be denounced and opposed. All. Everywhere. Always. Because human dignity, the demand for freedom, the condemnation of oppression, the rejection of brutal violence do not change value depending on of the territories, depending on the borders between the States, depending on the international relations between political parties or movements”, said the President of the Republic.
“Universities are the seat of free debate, of freedom of criticism, sometimes even of dissent from power, always connected across state borders. Freedom, peace, human rights pass through dialogue , confrontation, the free movement of work, against violence and against hatred which, when spreading, produces horrifying results, as happened yesterday in Slovakia”. Mattarella then reiterated that “the need to respect humanitarian law is in our Constitution. It applies in all directions: for the Palestinian people, it applies to the boys raped and killed while listening to music at a rave last October 7, it applies to the children whose throats were slaughtered that day, it applies to Mahsa Amini and the girls who after her were imprisoned because they wore the headscarf incorrectly, it applies to the girls who cannot study in Afghanistan. For all of our Republic violations of human rights must always be opposed”.
“The power, the worst one, wants the universities of its own country to be isolated, without relations or collaboration with the universities of other countries because this condition allows the worst of the powers to control the universities, to compress culture and to prevent its cry and its push for freedom. I reiterate the hope for dialogue in mutual respect, with particular attention to everything that concerns the effectiveness of the right to education, without anyone believing they can. demand to impose evaluations or decisions, but with respect for the opinions of others because in this respect lies freedom”.
