ROME – There was a back-and-forth at the European Parliament between Vice President Christel Schaldemose (Danish Socialists) and Spanish MEP Irene Montero. Before speaking, Montero was invited to remove the keffiyeh she was wearing, because it was considered a ‘partisan’ symbol and therefore prohibited by regulation. The Podemos MEP thus removed the head covering from her shoulders, but before starting her speech she responded to Schaldemose: “Madam President, international norms also prevent genocide and here we have Europe supporting one. This norm is not respected one 👇🏼 pic.twitter.com/X2vjBBgITW
— Irene Montero (@IreneMontero) October 22, 2024After responding to the vice-president of the European Parliament, Irene Montero began her speech on the situation in Gaza and Lebanon: “The attack on the United Nations peacekeeping mission is an act of war by Israel against European countries, against which they have done nothing. If you call genocide genocide, if you stop participating in Zionist propaganda saying that Israel has the right to defend itself, the terrorist state of Israel will then have to stop destroying schools, hospitals, refugee camps, will have to stop bombing Lebanon with white phosphorus and burning people alive in hospitals”. And again: “Commissioner, this is barbarity re-broadcast live and none of you will be able to say you didn’t know it. What is Europe for? If you let the strongest impose themselves by crushing the dignity of humanity and also international legality. You can implement a total arms embargo and break relations with Israel. If you don’t do it, you will be complicit”.
In his speech Montero recalled the 43 thousand Palestinian deaths and the over a thousand Lebanese. He also called for a total arms embargo and the breaking of relations with the State of Israel, “if they don’t do it, they are complicit”, he said in closing.
