CAGLIARI – The arsonist who set the fire that in the summer of 2021 destroyed 130 hectares of woods and pastures in the countryside of Ghilarza, in the Oristano area, has been sentenced to four years in prison. Three years later, the sentence arrived from the single judge of the Court of Oristano, who found a 33-year-old from Ghilarzaguilty, sentencing him to 4 years in prison, although he benefited from the sentence discount provided for those who access the abbreviated procedure.

THAT TRAGIC AFTERNOON OF JULY 7

The fire, set in the early hours of the afternoon of 7 July three years ago– ona day of strong south-westerly winds and with temperatures between 38 and 39 degrees– had affected an area of approximately 130 hectares. As the fire progressed it threatened roads, buildings and farms, devastating woods and pastures and putting public safety at risk. Only the following day was it possible to make the area affected by the flames safe, thanks to the use of over 120 men from the regional fire-fighting apparatus, and with the help of 5 helicopters and 3 Canadairs.
