Mattarella, letter to Herzog: “Enough war in Gaza, Italy and Israel united by a deep bond”

"Let the way be opened for a dialogue that leads to a just, necessary and sustainable two-state solution"

ROME – “It is essential to reach an immediate cessation of hostilities in the Gaza Strip, also to allow full humanitarian access to the civilian population, which has been exhausted for months and in need of the support of the international community. We hope that as soon as possible the cycle of violence can be stopped, that tensions are reduced – even at the regional level – and that the way is opened for a dialogue leading to a just, necessary, sustainable two-state solution, in line with international law /strong>.
A solution that is in everyone’s interest and for which we must all commit ourselves.” The President of the Republic, Sergio Mattarella, wrote this in a message to the President of the State of Israel, Isaac Herzog.

“On this day of justified pride of the Israeli people, we witness with great concern the dramatic developments in the region, increasingly marked by violence and tension. In this context, I would like to reiterate Italy’s commitment so that Israel can exercise one’s inalienable right to exist in peace and security”, Mattarella said again, on the occasion of the anniversary of Yom haAtzmaut.

“I renew my firm condemnation for the atrocious terrorist attack of 7 October 2023 and the expressions of condolences from the Italian Republic and my own. The hope remains alive among all Italians that the hostages still in the hands of Hamas terrorists can be as first returned to the freedom and affection of their loved ones”.

Our countries are united by a deep bond, founded on common values and grown over time thanks to a broad and diversified collaboration that has promoted the well-being of our peoples and an ever deeper mutual knowledge. This is a common heritage to which Italy attaches the utmost importance, worthy of being preserved and consolidated”.
