ROME – “Not only has the average age of women having their first child increased, but also that of women who undergo Pma cycles after the age of 40, which has gone from 20, 7% in 2005 to 34% in 2022. Even in Pma the age factor is decisive: embryos obtained with oocytes from a 35-year-old woman reach a 70% success rate which drops considerably in women over 42 who are at risk that the pregnancy is not completed and that it degenerates into a late abortion”. This was revealed by Antonio Pellicer, one of the world’s leading experts on fertility issues, full professor of Obstetrics and Gynecology at the University of Valencia, founder ofIvi ( Valencian Institute of Infertility specialized in assisted reproduction).
“IN TWO YEARS IN ITALY 20 THOUSAND LESS BIRTS”
“A massive awareness campaign should be carried out, like those organized in recent years to combat health risk factors such as smoking and alcohol, which starts from schools and teaches young people that infertility is a real pathology, that there are warning signs that it is important to recognize, that it can be prevented and fought, but only if addressed in the right time” , explains Pellicer, who also comments on the Istat data on births: “The births of the resident population in Italy in 2023 were just over 379,000, in 2021 they were around 399,000. In just two years, therefore, 20,000 were born fewer children. Italy needs, for its own livelihood and well-being, to immediately make a change to its family support policy of welfare, healthcare that focuses on prevention, targeted work on young people to make them understand that reproductive health is a primary good that they must safeguard from an early age”, he concludes.
