ROME – Announced a few weeks ago and strongly supported by the League, the bill on compulsory military service has reached the Chamber. The measure, with the first signature of Eugenio Zoffili was registered under the name ‘Establishment of universal territorial military and civil service and delegation to the Government for its discipline’. “We wanted to think about the future of our children who, thanks to this law, will be able to choose between a military and civilian path on a regional basis, as announced by the Deputy Prime Minister and Minister Matteo Salvini. A proposal that will good for the new generations, the future of the country, to whom we have the duty to transmit the values of solidarity, courage and love for Italy and our territories”, said Zoffili.
But if the bill finds broad consensus in the League, Salvini first and foremost, this cannot be said of the rest of the government colleagues. Declaring himself against it was Defense Minister Crosetto who, when asked to Metropolis, on the proposal supported by the leader of the Northern League, replied: “If Matteo Salvini, speaking about the introduction of compulsory civil service, aims at the return of compulsory military service? The fact that he talks about civil service shows that he is not talking about compulsory military serviceat this moment is not compatible with the level of professionalism that we ask of the armed forces. that we will ask for more and more in the future.” At the beginning of May, Tajani was also clear on the subject: “Compulsory military service? There is no discussion about it, there are reservists in case of emergency. Compulsory military service would be very expensive in Italy, very difficult can be restored”.
A proposal therefore, which according to the statements of the Minister of Defense and that of Foreign Affairs, seems to have already died in the bud.
But what does the bill provide? Six months of military or civilian service for boys and girls aged between 18 and 26. Among the new features is proximity to home: young people will not be ‘sent’ out of the region but employed in businesses near their residence. The intent, announced by Minister Salvini, is to create “a great form of civic education, with people who can dedicate themselves to rescue, civil protection, first aid, forest protection”.
