ROME – A hornet’s nest of controversy. Since yesterday, the storm over Italy’s choice not to sign the declaration in favor of LGBTQIA+ rights has not abated.
A document that the current Presidency of the EU Council (Belgium) submitted a few days ago to the member states on the occasion of the International Day against Homophobia, which was celebrated just yesterday 17 May.
18 signatory countries: Belgium, Poland, Denmark, Cyprus, Ireland, Greece, Luxembourg, the Netherlands, Malta, Estonia, Austria, Finland, Germany, Portugal, Slovenia, France, Sweden, Spain.
9 non-signatory countries: Italy, Hungary, Romania, Bulgaria, Croatia, Lithuania, Latvia, Czech Republic and Slovakia.
The document provides for a commitment to guarantee and protect the rights of LGBTQIA+ people, through ad hoc national policies that support the appointment of a new EU Commissioner for Equality in the next legislature< /strong>. The signatory countries also invite the EU Commission to pursue and implement a new strategy to improve the rights of LGBTQIA+ people during the next legislature, allocating sufficient resources and collaborating with civil society.
Why didn’t Italy sign? Eugenia Roccella, Minister for Family, Birth and Equal Opportunities, explains it: “Once again the left does not have the courage of its own positions and prefers to hide behind the usual lies. The Italian government is on the front line against any discrimination all over the world, wherever it comes from, while the left uses the sacrosanct fight against discrimination related to sexual orientation as a fig leaf to hide its real objective, namely gender. We are very clear : our government has signed the European declaration against homophobia, biphobia and transphobia We have not signed and will not sign anything that concerns the denial of male and female identity, which has already caused so many injustices in the world. particularly to the detriment of women. If the left and Elly Schlein want to revive the Zan law, gender and the possibility of declaring oneself male or female beyond biological reality, they must have the courage to say so clearly. . If it is the gender they want, they should propose it openly and do it in the electoral campaign, so as to allow voters to express their opinion on this too.”
The secretary of the Democratic Party Elly Schlein is very harsh: “What anger and what shame. On the national day against homotransphobia, this government decides not to sign a declaration for European policies in favor of LGBT+ people , is not acceptable. The Democratic Party will continue to fight for a law against homotransphobia, with the Zan law, and to ensure full rights for Lhbtq+ families starting with the recognition of their children, which this government also signed last year the declaration, this year he didn’t do it to campaign on the skin of discriminated people”.
The comment of the Democratic Party deputy and head of Rights of the Democratic Party Alessandro Zan was also bitter: “The right continues to violate fundamental human rights”. “Just today, Italy did not sign the EU declaration to promote policies in favor of LGBT+ people because according to the Meloni government it ‘follows the Zan bill’. Translated: because it asks to respect fundamental human rights. < strong>And this right wants to continue violating them.”
