ROME – This morning at 11.55 the tennis matches of the ATP Tennis Tournament at the Foro Italico, of the men’s doubles between Gonzalez/Roger-Vasellin and Arevalo/ Pavic at the Campo 12, and of the women’s singles between Keys and Cirstea at the Campo Pietrangeli, were interrupted by 11 people adhering to the Last Generation Repair Fund campaign. Four people took to the field, throwing confetti, while others among the spectators spoke up to remind the public of the climate, social and democratic emergency that our country is experiencing. One person in the audience glued their feet to the steps. At 12.03 private security, firefighters and law enforcement arrived. The interruption of the matches lasted over 45 minutes.
Francesca, beekeeper and agricultural worker.“If I am here today it is because I want to bear my testimony as an agricultural worker of a very small company, who is living daily in the uncertainty of seeing your job as a beekeeper vanish. Disasters are becoming the norm due to climate collapse and this will drive small businesses out of business. Those who have to pay are those who caused all this, i.e. large companies and multinationals. What future, what world are we leaving to our daughters? To our grandchildren?”.
Leonardo, physics researcher.“I’m here because I’m afraid of the extreme heat that we will have to face in the coming summer, I’m worried about my grandmother who is 92 years old and he is among the most vulnerable people, who risks his life on a hot day just to go and buy bread.”
