ROME – Sparks fly between Ignazio La Russa and Nicola Fratoianni in the aftermath of Ilaria Salis’s election as Avs MEP.

“Salis? I don’t know the assessment of the Hungarian judiciary – commented the president of the Senate on Radio24 – having been elected she must be allowed to at least participate in the work of Parliament when it is in session“. The following sentences end up under the spotlight: “I don’t consider your result a surprise. However, I don’t consider a person’s candidacy to have him released from prison a good thing for democracy“.

The response from the leader of the Alleanza Verdi Sinistra was not long in coming. “The second position in the State – he told Rainews – could very well have avoided the bad joke about Ilaria Salis. Democracy means presenting yourself at the elections with a programme, with your own ideas , with their own candidates. And the citizens of this country considered it right and useful to send Ilaria to the European Parliament. The authorities of our country, the Italian government and also the President of the Senate should rather devote one’s commitment to communicating the outcome of the Italian vote regarding Ilaria Salis to Budapest, thus allowing her return to Italy“.
