La Russa: “Compulsory military service? Error, we don’t force those who don’t want to join the military”

The Russian rejects Salvini's proposal to recreate compulsory military service: "It's a mistake, training is the responsibility of schools and families"

ROME – “I understand Salvini’s intent but the education of young people is the task of schools and families, not of the armed forces. Military service was conceived to defend freedom and independence not to train young people. Let’s fix schools, let’s value families but we don’t force anyone who doesn’t want to join the military. The president of the Senate, Ignazio La Russa, says this regarding Matteo Salvini’s proposal to reintroduce compulsory military service.

“My proposal was on a voluntary basis: to do a short period of 40-60 daysgiving benefits to those who do it. But I consider it a mistake to imagine an obligation”, he concludes.
