ROME – “No controversy with President Mattarella who has my respect, the respect of the League, the respect of the Italians. They don’t have the same respect, and this was the theme, in Europe, some other presidents, some other leaders who risk dragging Italy and Europe towards the third world war”. The deputy prime minister and minister Matteo Salvini says it in Agorà on Raitre, extinguishing the controversy after the tweet by Claudio Borghi, senator of the League, who launched a provocation and attack against the President of the Republic Sergio Mattarella. The Northern League member, on X, made a post for June 2nd in which he negatively commented on the words spoken yesterday by President Mattarella. “Today the Sovereignty of our Nation is consecrated,” wrote Borghi, posting an image of a newspaper with a headline on Mattarella’s phrase according to which “sovereignty belongs to the European Union”. For the Northern League member, Mattarella’s words needed to be ‘corrected’ because sovereignty belongs to Italy and not to the EU.
“I express my respect to President Mattarella who is the guarantor of the Constitution and the Italian Constitution repudiates war and provides that sovereignty belongs to the people and not to some European bureaucrat”, adds Salvini.
Is it true that after Borghi’s tweet you were called by the prime minister? “Absolutely not – replies Salvini -. And I’ll make my phone records available. It will be the fiftieth invented phone call between me and Giorgia Meloni, who we often talk to not about controversies or problems but to build this is a solid government that will last until 2027”.
