ROME – “Together with the presidents of the constitutional bodies of Italy, on this occasion of celebration for our Republic, I extend greetings to the Ambassadors accredited in Rome. The friendship of your countries has accompanied you in these decades and the your presence expresses the strength of the ties that unite us. I thank the Rai orchestra, the director Michele Gamba and the cellist Ettore Pagano, with compliments for the brilliant start of his career. The head of state Sergio Mattarella says this in the speech after the concert at the Quirinale in honor of the diplomatic corps accredited to the Italian state on the occasion of Republic Day.

MATTARELLA: VOTE OF ’46 STARTED VITA DEMOCRATICA

Mattarella recalled that “on 2 June 1946, Italy chose the Republic. That vote – at the start of democratic life – represented a call to responsibility for Italians. In those years of widespread hopes, aspirations for well-being and the improvement of personal conditions proceeded together with democratic and social conquests”.

MATTARELLA: EXTRAORDINARY TIMES, COMMITMENT TO PEACE

“The international situation today once again presents extraordinary times. We feel – today at a global level – the need to commit ourselves to peace, to pursue together everywhere freedom and development, democracy and the spread of well-being, civil maturation, economic growth and rights: this appears to us, in the international community, to be the great challenge, the horizon we have before us”, he explained.

For the President of the Republic “it is necessary to face contemporary international challenges and the search for peace in war contexts, determinedly rejecting insidious trade-offs: security to the detriment of rights, absence of aggressive conflicts in exchange for submission, order through fear and repression economic prosperity in exchange for subjection”.

MATTARELLA: SCARY VIOLENCE, SHOCKFUL NUMBER OF VICTIMS

“With the invasion of Ukraine – an independent and sovereign country – Russia has brought the war back to the heart of Europe and once again dug a furrow between the countries of the continent that we dreamed of being in peace and collaboration, free and democratic from Lisbon to Vladivostok,” the president said. “The Russian Federation – continues Mattarella – has demolished the security architecture that has guaranteed peace and stability on the European continent for long decades, since the Helsinki Agreements of the mid-seventies; and has launched a new, distressing, arms race.
