It’s filler mania, Sime “Stop free sales in pharmacies, do-it-yourself is risky”

The president of the Italian Society of Aesthetic Medicine, Emanuele Bartoletti, warns of possible complications: "Damage even dramatic"

ROME – Pret-a-porter retouching, accessible to everyone, even minors, is “very dangerous”. Emanuele Bartoletti, president of the Italian Society of Aesthetic Medicine ( Sime).

“FILLERS SOLD IN PHARMACY TO DOCTORS BUT ALSO TO PATIENTS”

“Pharmacies are authorized to sell fillers to doctors, but unfortunately also to patients. Online, any adult or undeclared minor, as long as they have a PayPal account, can buy any filler. This is very dangerous. In our opinion, fillers should only be sold to doctors and, I will say more, only to trained doctors, because otherwise the damage caused can be dramatic strong>”. This is the response of the president of the Italian Society of Aesthetic Medicine (SIME), questioned by Dire regarding the possibility of purchasing packs of fillers (syringes with hyaluronic acid inside, to be injected for the purpose of increase the volume and substance of a particular localized area).

WHAT THE LAW PROVIDES

The law, in fact, specifies who can inject fillers (aesthetic doctors) but does not clarify who can purchase them in pharmacies because a medical prescription is no longer necessary. “This is a big risk – continued Bartoletti – because fillers, if not performed by expert hands, can lead to even serious complications such as skin necrosis or serious scarring problems. Of course, this can also happen to a doctor, but the doctor knows the complications, knows how to recognize them, knows how to prevent them and above all manage them”.

“CORRECTIONS IN YOUNG PEOPLE ONLY FOR TRAUMAS AND IF NECESSARY”

When asked about ‘do-it-yourself’ fillers by young girls, Bartoletti replied: “The ‘do-it-yourself’ problem is serious, but especially at this moment so are the new standards of beauty that are shared on social networks by very young girls, often minors, who have nothing to do with beauty. The ‘pre’ are always much more beautiful than the ‘post’, most of the time exaggerated. The limits, in aesthetic medicine, should never be outdated: fashions must not be part of medicine and above all corrections in young people should be carried out only in case of a present problem (traumas, malformations) and if necessary”.
