ROME – The first match broadcast free-to-air by Rai in the 2024 edition of the Internazionali BNL d’Italia tennis championship will be Fabio Fognini’s debut in the main draw. The 36-year-old Ligurian tennis player, in his eighteenth experience at the Foro Italico, where he won 15 of the 31 matches played, will face the British Daniel Evans, number 67 in the world, on Wednesday 8 May (Fognini is currently number 92 in the ATP ranking), in what is only the second meeting between the two, with the Briton having won the only previous one, on the fast one in Dubai, in three sets in 2020.
Fognini, who debuted in Rome in 2006, beaten in the first round by the Swede Thomas Johansson, reached the quarter-finals in 2018, stopped by Rafa Nadal, in what still remains his best result on the Capitoline red clay.
Fognini-Evans will be broadcast live on Rai 2 starting at 7.00 pm, with commentary by Marco Fiocchetti and Adriano Panatta, and interventions from the sidelines by Maurizio Fanelli. In the studio, with Cristina Caruso, there will be Rita Grande.
