ROME – Italy maintains a very high share of employed people in conditions of economic vulnerability. Between 2013 and 2023 the purchasing power of gross wages in Italy decreased by 4.5% while in the other major EU27 economies it grew at rates between 1.1% of France and 5.7 of Germany. This is what emerges from Istat’s annual report.
Young people are the main protagonists of the demographic decline taking place in Italian society. In 2023 in Italy there will be just over 10 million 330 thousand young people aged 18-34, with a loss of over 3 million since 2002 (-23.9 percent). Compared to the peak in 1994, the decline is approximately 5 million (-32.3 percent). Istat reports this in its annual report.
The reduction in young people from 2002 to 2023 was 28.6% in the South, due to the birth rate decline and the recovery of migratory flows, compared to 19.3% in the Centre-North, where the phenomenon is attenuated by positive migratory balances and the greater fertility of foreign parents. Due to the operation of similar phenomena, the reduction was larger in internal areas (-25.7 percent) compared to centers (-19.9), and in rural areas (-26.9 percent) compared to cities. (-19.2 percent); in the South, the decline is larger in each of these typologies.
